    Gwendolyn Brooks bio material & poems in Norton Anthology: bio 1623-1625, "kitchenette building" 1625-26, "The Sundays of Satin-Legs Smith" 1628-1632, "We Real Cool" 1638, "A Bronzeville Mother [...]" and "The Last Quatrain of the Ballad of Emmett Till(poems available through links; the last poem site includes hyperlinks in each line to information about the death of fourteen-year-old Emmett Till)

  • for WEDNESDAY March 30

    Mid-term exam including authors, titles, general concepts, concepts of the black artist, quotations, characters. May consist of fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice; brief identification; perhaps a short essay.

  • for FRIDAY April 1

    -- we'll finish our discussion of Gwendolyn Brooks

    -- have read the bio material on Lorraine Hansberry (Norton, pp.1768-70), and at least Act i, Scenes 1 & 2, of A Raisin in the Sun (Norton pp.1771-96). Finish reading/rereading the play over the week-end for us to discuss more completely on Monday.
