  • READ Appendix C: The Reading Process in Windows on Writing, pp.498-507.
    Do practices C-1 and C-2; read practices C-3 through C-7, but do not do them for "No Comprendo."
  • READ the essay "Our Barbies, Ourselves" by Emily Praeger (handout).
    Preview, annotate, and outline the essay as shown in Appendix C, practices C-3 through C-7.
  • WRITE a response paragraph to "Our Barbies, Ourselves" as explained in Appendix C. Have your reaction paragraph on Monday.

  • READ AND DO EXERCISES FOR "Using Demonstrative Adjectives" (Section C, practices 20-6, and Review of Student Writing pp.394-395) pp.382 - 395, in the textbook. PHOTOCOPY pp.394-395, make corrections on the photocopy, put your name on it, and turn in to me when you arrive at the library.
  • LIBRARY VISIT Today we'll meet in Smathers Library West, room 148 (as you come in the front doors, it's the room on the left past the stairs), for an introduction to the LUIS system. You'll need to know this for later assignments, so SHOW UP and be ON TIME.

  • REREAD the introduction paragraph(s) for essays by DiMarco, Quindlen, and Sanger in textbook.
  • READ Chapter 5, Section A, "Introductions and Conclusions", pp. 106-111.
  • To bring the material of these readings together, 1) CHOOSE a topic for a proposed cause-effect essay, and 2) CREATE an outline for it; include with the outline a complete example introduction with an extended thesis. E-mail this to me by Monday night; in the subject line put your name and "C&E". DON'T send it to the listserve -- only to me. (See the assignment for next Monday to see why we're doing all this)

  • Using what you learned during the LUIS orientation, FIND THREE (3) SOURCES for information to use in your proposed cause-and-effect essay.
  • TYPE UP A NOTE-SHEET (all three on one sheet) containing 1) the title, author(s), and the call #s for each source, and 2) some brief notes on what information you would use from each source. GIVE ONE COPY TO ME and keep one for yourself to work from.

  • WRITE a draft of a cause-and-effect essay, on the topic of your choice. You can use any of the approaches we discussed in class, i.e. search for causes OF an effect, or predict an effect FROM a string of causes. The project can be as "serious" as you want to make it. Use material you looked up in the library during the previous week to illustrate or support your essay -- don't give only your say so, but use factual material wherever possible. We will discuss documentation style later -- for right now, concentrate on drawing clear lines of progression (toward an effect) or descent (from a cause). Yes, typed.

  • CONSIDER what things in particular you like about those three sites (including but not limited to arrangement of material; ease of reading; graphics; number/kind of links; download time, etc.), and WRITE an (informal) critique of those three sites. E-mail me this critique by Monday night.
